What Is Crystal Identification?

Before we dive into today’s article, let’s have a quick recap for those that need it! Crystal identification is how we identify crystals. To do this, we look at their physical and chemical properties.

We might identify them based on their color, hardness, shape, streak, luster, gravity, tenancy, or other methods.

Each crystal is different, which makes them wonderful and unique (see also ‘9 Beautiful Unique Crystals‘). But there are components we can look out for that will help us identify the crystal.

Now that we know what crystal identification is, let’s move on to see what tools we can use to identify our crystals today!

Ways To Identify Crystals

Let’s dive straight into it! There are a few different ways we can identify crystals. As we mentioned earlier, we can look at their physical properties which will narrow down what our crystal could be.

Using the color of the crystal is one of the easiest ways to identify it. However, there are so many hues for one type of crystal, it can be tricky to know what the crystal is just by looking at the color.

A good example is quartz (Also check out Fire And Ice Quartz), which can come in virtually any color! Colors can change within crystals too due to changes in its composition and any impurities. You might notice that the color of your crystal changes over time!

Thankfully, we have a solution here. You can rub a crystal with another crystal or scrape part of it away to create a powder. The powder will show you the crystal’s true color, which can be used to identify it!

Another option is to use the Mohs hardness scale. This tells you how soft or hard the crystal is, and gives you an idea of where it sits on the scale. It is another way to identify the crystal, although it might not be the most beginner-friendly method.

You can also use tenacity tests, acid tests, or magnetism to see what characteristics your crystal has. From here, you can narrow down the possibilities and identify them.

Let’s dive in a little deeper and look at some popular crystal identification methods you can choose!

Crystal Color Charts

Crystal Color Charts

First, we have crystal color charts (see also, ‘25 Cream Colored Crystals‘). These are handy when you have the color of the crystal and want to learn more about its meaning and uses. Different colors have different meanings based on religion, tradition, and culture.

Crystals here can be a gateway into understanding more about the different cultures in the world.

By using a color chart, you can learn more about the crystals and their significance to others. We can use the color spectrum to do this. The color spectrum reflects light visible to the human eye.

The electromagnetic energy depends on wavelength and frequency. Red has the lowest frequency with the least amount of energy, but the longest wavelength.

At the other end of the spectrum is purple, with the highest frequency, high amount of energy, and the shortest wavelength.

Let’s use what we know about the color spectrum to learn more about the different colors of crystals! This can help you identify some of your crystals and can be done with a digital or physical copy of a color chart. You will also learn more about your crystal and what it does below!

Red Crystals

Red is a powerful color and is used to influence mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The color is often associated with Mars, blood, and the root chakra. This is because it has a high, primal, and dynamic energy.

Red is also the color associated with deep love and drive. It brings great motivation, courage, and energy too. Red colored crystals help you to feel powerful, fired up, and invigorated.

Orange Crystals

Orange crystals (see also ‘15 Beautiful Orange Crystals‘) are another energizing crystal. The color usually reminds us of warm fires, sunsets, and fresh orange lemonade. The yellow hues in orange crystals make it more welcoming compared to the harsh and powerful red crystals we just looked at.

Orange crystals also help people reconnect. They are associated with unity and peace, along with the Sacral Chakra (sex and pleasure). This chakra signifies sexual satisfaction and is a good crystal to have in your back pocket!

Yellow Crystals

Yellow crystals are known for understanding, exceptional knowledge, and revealing a greater consciousness. The color provides uplifting energy not only to you, but to others around you as well.

The color yellow is happy and energetic, bringing us memories of fun and bright days when we see it.

Yellow crystals are good to use if you want to improve your confidence and conviction of your power.

Green Crystals

Green crystals are used regularly to manifest career growth, business success, and financial stability. The color is often linked to flora and the calming and soothing benefits of plants. It also suggests spiritual and physical growth.

Green also suggests safety and suggests that danger has passed. The crystals can be used to connect you to the environment and allow you to feel nature’s energy.

Pink Crystals

Pink is often linked to the heart chakra thanks to its connections to love and devotion. Pink is a pleasing color that soothes and is often used for relaxation. Pink crystals can help address issues of anger or feel down.

Typically, pink crystals are used for healing (see also, ‘The Best Healing Crystals for Dogs‘) and self-love. Crystals like rose quartz are typically used to open your heart to love, both from yourself and others. Pink crystals can be the palest pink (almost clear), to deep pinks that are almost red.

Purple Crystals

Purple has the highest frequency, a high amount of energy, and shortest wavelength. What does that mean for crystals? It means that purple crystals (see also, ‘What Does a Purple Aura Mean?‘) are the most powerful! They will benefit all aspects of your life in various ways.

Their potent energy can uplift your attitude and spirit, helping to ease the symptoms of anxiety and depression. They are wonderful crystals that will calm your thoughts, shift your mindset, and allow you to refocus.

If you are looking at a bleak or worst-case scenario, purple crystals can help you navigate the tough times!

Blue Crystals

Blue signifies a deep emotional connection with everyone. The pleasant color is modest and soothing. It’s one many of us enjoy seeing as it reminds us of those clear, cloudless skies.

Blue crystals (see also, ‘15 Blue Purple Crystals‘) can impact your life in many ways. Wearing them helps to bring peace to your life and some gentleness. They can also be used to enhance psychic abilities and will help you invoke calming emotions in your life (see also ‘15 Powerful Crystals For Psychic Abilities‘).

Blue crystals come in a range of shades from the palest of blue to dark blues that almost appear black (see also ‘15 Beautiful Black Crystals With White Spots‘).

Black Crystals

Black crystals provide protection (see also, ‘7 Crystals for Car Protection‘), safety, and security. They can act as an unseen mantle in our homes and family. As there is no light in black crystals, they are wonderful to fight unwanted energies. Plus, they are breathtaking to look at!

Clear Crystals

Clear or white crystals suggest serenity, purity, and simplicity. Their energy is clean and refreshing, while also being powerful. The color unifies all other colors in the spectrum we discussed earlier.

Although white is not technically a color, it is part of every color in the spectrum! White crystals are brilliant for deep relaxation and cleansing.
