This can depend on whether the stone has been polished or tumbled. Because this stone only measures between 3.5–4 on the MoHs, malachite is not suitable for being used in jewelry. Generally, it is suggested that any stone or crystal used in jewelry has a MoHs of at least seven.
This will ensure that the crystal is safe, and will also last for its intended purpose. When broken, malachite will break cleanly and keep the sale crystal structure. When fractured, this stone can be uneven and brittle, but also clam-like.
Moldavite
Moldavite is a stunning mineraloid, formed by meteorite impact. Coloring can vary from browns to greens, with the green being a stunning shade. Streak coloring can vary, too, with the majority of them being white.
When moldavite breaks, it has no cleavage structure and is always clam-like (conchoidal) when it fractures. This gives it a distinct appearance compared to malachite. The luster of moldavite is vitreous, or glass-like.
This is again another major difference between this and malachite. Similar to malachite, however, moldavite only has a hardness of 5 of the MoHs, so it is not appropriate for most jewelry. Jewelry made from this stone should not be worn indefinitely, as it will cause damage.
Properties
Malachite
This stone belongs to the Carbonate group and has high levels of copper in it, making it unsuitable for extended use. The copper in malachite means that this crystal cannot be used for elixir drinks, as copper is dangerous if ingested.
Similarly, when cleaning this stone, cleaning should only be done using a soft cloth. Ideally, water should not be used at any point, but a quick rinse under some cold water will be okay. Never leave the stone sitting in the water for extended periods of time.
Moldavite
Moldavite is a member of the tektite family and has no toxic complaints to it, unlike malachite. This means that moldavite can be used safely for extended periods of time without fear of poisoning.
Thanks to this, moldavite can be used in crystal elixirs. However, because of how soft it is, it is not always recommended.
