Ways To Identify Crystals
Let’s dive straight into it! There are a few different ways we can identify crystals. As we mentioned earlier, we can look at their physical properties which will narrow down what our crystal could be.
Using the color of the crystal is one of the easiest ways to identify it. However, there are so many hues for one type of crystal, it can be tricky to know what the crystal is just by looking at the color.
A good example is quartz (Also check out Fire And Ice Quartz), which can come in virtually any color! Colors can change within crystals too due to changes in its composition and any impurities. You might notice that the color of your crystal changes over time!
Thankfully, we have a solution here. You can rub a crystal with another crystal or scrape part of it away to create a powder. The powder will show you the crystal’s true color, which can be used to identify it!
Another option is to use the Mohs hardness scale. This tells you how soft or hard the crystal is, and gives you an idea of where it sits on the scale. It is another way to identify the crystal, although it might not be the most beginner-friendly method.
You can also use tenacity tests, acid tests, or magnetism to see what characteristics your crystal has. From here, you can narrow down the possibilities and identify them.

Compared to other apps out there, Stone is the easiest to use and has the best layout. It’s pretty minimal, but you can navigate it quickly and easily. The only downside is the images do not have their names listed. You need to click on each image to see its name and identify them.

Crystalyze is super easy to use and features a minimalist design like the Stone app we looked at earlier. Crystalyze is simple to use and is one of the most user-friendly apps on the market!
Each crystal on the app can be enjoyed in high-resolution images and plenty of information you can enjoy. Each crystal has a description of 180 words. However, there aren’t many crystals on the app!
There are only fifty crystals and it’s quite restrictive. You can only identify your crystal by scrolling through the page and matching it up with yours. It’s not ideal, but there is plenty of information packed into this app!
Minerals Guide is a wonderful app to help you understand and analyze crystals and rock characteristics. You can also identify different fossils, this app has it all! You can enjoy over 4000 crystals, terms, and properties that will boost your knowledge and help you identify your crystal.
